BASICA Table Lamp
Santiago Roqueta: Basica Table Lamp
Santa & Cole, Spain, imported from Europe.
The appearance of the Basica in 1987 heralded a return to warmth in household lighting. The lamp lived up to the expectations of its designers and became Santa & Cole's most representative piece.
One day in 1986, Javier Nieto Santa and Gabriel Ordeig Cole were in Santiago Roqueta's office discussing launching out the Snark Desing Collection, when a wodden cylinder he had found in a rubbish container suddenly appear. His idea was to turn it into a lamp. Gabriel Ordeig, an S&C partner, had the idea of incorporating a set of stitched cardboard shades, and thus was born the Bsica, a lamp which soon became the house emblem and which was to mark a new trend in European design.
When presented at the Valencia Furniture Fair in September 1987, this incandescent lamp with its fine cardboard shade caused quite a stir. Cardboard shades had by then become associated with an old-fashioned and obsolete type of lamp and had been replaced in public taste by the cold light given off by the black or chromed metal shade with a halogen or sodium bulb. The Bsica marked a return to the use of natural materials for light-diffusers, and warmth rather than the cold which had predominated, yet made no concessions in the modernity of the design.
The concept of the Basica is simple: a wooden cylinder, reinforced by a stable metal base, and a choice of shades. This was to lead to the Matrix System: Santa & Cole offers a stand for which the purchaser can choose a shade from among many different shapes, materials and finishes.
The stand, which is almost pre-Classical in its simplicity, comes in two types of wood and three types of metal for the base, inspired by the three Olympic medals: bronze, gold and silver. Recently, nickel has taken the place of silver, thanks to its greater functionality and the fact that it does not need cleaning or maintenance.
