The Riki Stool is an iconic Japanese design created in 1965 by one of Japan’s most influential modern designers, Riki Watanabe. Lightweight, strong, and remarkably innovative for its time, this folding stool transforms a simple material into a lasting design classic.

Crafted entirely from recyclable cardboard, the Riki Stool features a precision folding structure that gives it impressive strength while remaining light enough for easy handling. The stool is assembled without glue or tools, using only folds and interlocking tabs. It can also be disassembled and folded flat for compact storage.

Originally designed for a special exhibition by Fujingaho magazine the year after the Tokyo Olympics, the Riki Stool anticipated many ideas that still feel relevant today: sustainable materials, efficient flat-pack design, and furniture that invites creativity and interaction. Its surface can be drawn or painted on, and over time the marks of everyday use become part of its character.

Although made of cardboard, the stool is built for outstanding durability. The low model supports up to 740 kg (1,630 lbs), and the high model supports up to 650 kg (1,430 lbs), far exceeding the load capacity of many standard chairs.
