Ettore Sottsass: Cartlon Miniature Cabinet
Memphis Design, Milan Italy.
Scale 1:4: 19.37" height x 18.70" width x 3.23" depth.

This is a miniature scale model of 1:4. This miniature Ettore Sottsass Carlton measures 19.37" height x 18.70" width x 3.23" depth. This collectible miniature Carlton cabinet was released in a limited edition of 1000 pieces. Ettore Sottsass's signature and the limited edition number are impressed on the pedestal. Packaged in a cardboard box which displays the image and features of the piece. The vivid colors and seemingly random interplay of solids and voids suggest avant-garde painting and sculpture. Yet, typical of Ettore Sottsass, underlying the surface brilliance is an entirely logical structural system, of real and implied equilateral triangles.

Carlton was designed by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Design in 1981. The Carlton is an icon of Italian 20th Century Design and one of the most outspoken pieces in the Memphis design collection. The Carlton cabinet & room divider is part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. But you can still purchase the Carlton today. NOVA68 has the Carlton, as well as numerous other Memphis items on their website. Ettore Sottsass is not only one of the most influential designers of the latter half of the twentieth century but also one of the most paradoxical. While he has had a successful career producing industrial designs for the mainstream corporation Olivetti, for everything from typewriters and computers to office landscapes, he has also created strikingly unconventional consumer-oriented objects that challenge the bourgeois audience at which they are aimed to reassess its assumptions of the limits of "good taste." Between 1981 and 1988, Ettore Sottsass and a small international group of like-minded designers who called themselves Memphis created nonconformist furniture. The totemic "Carlton" room divider is an outstanding example of his Memphis designs.
